Assignment #2 (40)

Textbook, page 45. Write 2-3 paragraphs.

Use all the skills with have learned so far:

  • interesting first sentence (idea)
  • paragraph unity
  • complex sentence (sentence variety)
  • voice (your unique experience, ideas, charater)
  • writing as a process which is slowly corrected with several drafts (process)

More Editing (10)

Find and fix the errors on page 46.

Then self-check on page 243.

Use Show Me (20)

Here is a short story. It is one paragraph. Quickly rewrite.

The river was moving fast and I was starting to think the rafting trip was a bad idea. My heart was beating so hard I could feel it in my throat. Every time the raft approached a rock, I grabbed my life jacket a little harder. When would this horrible trip be over? Would I survive? I closed my eyes and waited.

It is boring.

  • no details
  • no personality (voice)
  • no beginning, middle, or end (story)
  • too many unanswered questions (how fast, why a bad idea, etc)
  • boring first sentence
  • not much sentence variety

Challenge: rewrite the story. Add voice, details, structure. Create something fun to read.
