Read the short paragraph. Find 11 mistakes.

Read this short story — Death by Scrabble.

Next week, be ready to discuss the answers to these questions:

Part A Understanding the Story

  • Who are the main characters?
  • What is the setting?
  • Describe the plot.
  • What happened at the end?

Part B Thinking About the Story

  • What kind of story is this — fiction or non-fiction?
  • Does the writer seem to follow any rules for paragraphs?
  • How does the writer create structure in the story?
  • Give 1-2 examples of how the writer gives us hints about what is going to happen.

Page 31, On Your Own (12) — Practice writing

Look at the bottom of the page. There are 6 steps that show you how to quickly write a paragraph with good organisation — and a good idea sentence (the first sentence)

You get exactly 12 minutes to write the first draft of a paragraph.

  • Choose a topic from the list.
  • Don’t worry about the mistakes — it’s the first draft.
  • Keep the paper.
  • You will rewrite it next class.

Page 33, edit (10) — Time Order – a new structure

  • Read the paragraph at the top of the page.
  • It shows time order.
  • Answer the 3 questions.
  • notice the time words and phrase at the bottom of the page.

Page 35, edit (10) — See the time order

Got to page 35. Do questions 1 and 2.

  • Read the topic sentence.
  • Read the other sentences. Put the other sentence sin the right order.

Write time order (15)

Write a paragraph with time order.

  • If you want a little easy question, go to page 39 or 40.
  • Use the hint in the smartphone.
  • Use time orders on page 33 that show order (e.g. first, then, etc).
  • Add time word from page 36 (like AT and ON).
  • If you want a little harder, go to page 41 or 42. The hints rare harder.

Hour 3

Review Complex Sentences (10)

  • Practice writing complex sentences in your notebook.
  • Here is the worksheet.
  • Let’s do the top half of the page today.

Hand in Room 8 summary (15)

This is a time limited assignment –12 minutes.

This is assignment #1. Hand in your one paragraph summary.

This is what I am looking for:

  • great first sentence
  • good paragraph organisation (the hamburger structure)
  • at least one complex sentence
  • great idea, words, sentence mix, organisation, convention, presentation (6+1 writing traits)
  • some time order words (if useful)

After reading the short story, make notes to answer these points:

  • Describe the characters, plot, and setting.
  • How does the writer create structure in the story?
  • How does the writer give us hints about what is going to happen next in the story?
  • What happened at the end of the story?

Hard Editing (20)

  • Read the text. Edit the mistakes.
  • Add punctuation to create sentences.
  • Write the corrected text in your notebook.
